Vincenzo Vela , born in Ligornetto in 1820, is an internationally renowned sculptor , a leading exponent of verism.
Vincenzo Vela was a leading exponent of verism. Upon his death in 1891, his son Spartaco (1854-1895) donated his property to the Confederation, on the condition that it become a museum or art school. In 1898 Casa Vela was inaugurated as a museum, but already in 1880 the building was used as a stately home and as a studio with an exhibition room for the sculptor.
Surrounded by a splendid English garden, it is today a museum where we find sculptures, terracotta sketches and plaster models reflecting the entire work of Vincenzo Vela, as well as sketches, drawings, personal memories of the sculptor, a large family library and oils by contemporary painters.
